First, we are extremely pleased to announce that Greg Stepanich from the Palm Beach Post named our last concert #4 on his "Top 10 of 2007" for Classical Music Performances. You can read about it here.

Secondly, we can't be more excited about our upcoming concert series in March. It's just not possible. Copernicus will be collaborating with the hottest theater group in Miami- Ground Up and Rising, and you won't want to miss the excellence and creativity that they are going to bring to this performance. March 8, at 8pm, we will be presenting "Story of a Soldier" at Arts at St. Johns on Miami Beach (ticket information here). March 9, the concert will be performed in Delray Beach, venue TBA. We have an unbelievable group of young performers slated to perform, and we can't wait to present this great program to Miami. Below are three reviews of the concert that we have found:

Sun Sentinel - Larry Budmen
http://www.sun-sentinel.com/features/lifestyle/sfl-muclcopernicusnbaug28,0,3033598.story

Palm Beach Post - Greg Stepanich
http://www.palmbeachpost.com/blogs/content/shared-blogs/palmbeach/stepanich

Miami Herald - Alan Becker
http://www.miamiherald.com/tropical_life/story/217453.html

We also appeared in the American Symphony Orchestra League "In the News" twice this past week, with the Sun Sentinel Review, and the following forward article by Larry Johnson in the Miami Herald:

http://www.miamiherald.com/234/story/210742.html

Thank you to everyone who made this concert series such a resounding success! Now it's on to the next. I promise that we have some very exciting projects in the pipeline, and we can't wait to unveil them!

Let us know what you think!

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://coperniblog.blogspot.com/2007/08/bravo-copernicus-critics-have-spoken.html' title='Bravo Copernicus! My name is Randy Wong, and I was one of the four composers featured on this weekend's "From the Land of The Buddha" concert cycle that opened our second season.

This week was completely exhilirating for me, in the many ways that makes Project Copernicus special. One thing that I especially like about working with this group is the process that is undertaken with each individual project; there are no "cookie-cutter" or formulaic approaches to getting the music to sound a 'certain' way. And, unlike traditional ensemble rehearsals, in which musical decisions are often made from the top down (i.e., the conductor makes all choices, and his/her players surrender their artistic license to him/her), Project Copernicus is very democratic. I experienced this first-hand as composer for this concert; every single one of my colleagues who performed in my composition "L'ours Chinois" supported my work — not only with their marvelous talents on their individual instruments, but also with suggestions and ideas to further the musical interpretation of my writing. In many instances, their ideas were much better than my own!

As a bassist, I myself have participated in many composer readings and performances of new works. All too often, musicians pass up the opportunity to engage the composers in dialogue about their writing, or are not genuinely interested in the performance of the new work. That is not the case with Project Copernicus, and since it is not, each of the pieces performed in this concert cycle were truly embraced by all involved.

It seems to me that the process that led up to our most recent performances was not lost on our audience — quite a few concert attendees came up to me after both performances to mention how much they enjoyed our work! Even though Project Copernicus is young in its (hopefully) long career, I feel that our approach towards music making is really starting to mature, and I look forward to using PC as a model for working with my own projects.

My thanks to Chung Park and Steve Danyew, along with Angel Lam and Ryo Sato for inviting me to be a part of this special concert cycle. As we say in Hawai`i ... "Mahalo nui loa" ('thank you very much') and "A hui hou" (until we meet again) ...

Much Aloha,

Randy Wong
Bassist & Composer of "L'ours Chinois"

P.S.: Please visit my website www.randywong.net/exotica if you are interested in learning more about my emerging work as a composer.

Future programming and odds and ends

Steve and I had a lengthy talk about all sorts of things tonight, and in the middle of it all we just stopped and said "Whoa, we're talking about next year. Nine months ago this baby was only a twinkle in our eyes and now it's starting to walk on its own.

We've got lots of really great programming ideas on tap for next year and beyond. Details will start rolling in when we have things a bit more solid but you can be sure that we'll be bringing fresh ideas and top-notch performances to Miami and the rest of South Florida.

I met with Jim Stephenson this past week in Naples, FL, and we discussed his arranging Ravel's Mother Goose Suite for String Quintet, Piano and Percussion, as well as writing a new piece for us which we'll put on an all-American program sometime in the next year or two. We have had an immense amount of help from Dana Pezoldt and the Miami-Dade Department of Cultural Affairs, and their support in helping us apply for our first grant has been remarkable. And Carol Hoffman at Arts at St. Johns has guided us through this process with amazingly helpful advice and knowledge, and we could not have done it without her. We look forward to developing a strong relationship with the Department of Cultural Affairs, and we hope to garner their support for the future.

Additionally, we are very excited about the upcoming concert series in May, and it promises to be an exciting mix of high-quality and diverse music. Stay tuned to the website and updates here for more detailed information, but as we said in earlier posts the dates are May 6 (Vizcaya Gardens) and the weekend of May 11-13 (Venues TBA). As always, your input/suggestions/comments/thoughts are always welcomed and appreciated, so feel free to post here or email info@projectcopernicus.org.

Blog on Blog

Hi All,

Palm Beach Post music Critic Greg Stepanich has written a thoughtful and lengthy piece on his blog about our concert at St. John's on Jan. 21. Here's a link:

http://www.palmbeachpost.com/blogs/content/shared-blogs/palmbeach/stepanich/entries/2007/03/copernicus_conc.html

We're moving on several other fronts right now. We've got Matthew Sarelson, a lawyer on South Beach doing our 501c3 filing for us pro bono, we finally have a checking account open courtesy of Emilio Vazquez at Coconut Grove Bank and some money to put into it thanks to the generous people who donated money during our last concert cycle.

Speaking of which...

We have two concert cycle coming up. One a baroque concert featuring lesser known Italian baroque composers including Leonardo Leo and Francesco Geminiani at beautiful Vizcaya Mueseum and Gardens on May 6 (vizcayamuseum.org, check it out-it's gorgeous) and the second a cycle of music from the near and far east featuring pC percussionist Rod Squance running from May 11-13th. Lots of cool stuff going on. More to come...

Updates

Hello all Copernicans,

It has been a while, but we've been up to things. Most importantly, we've tentatively scheduled concerts for the 10-12 of May (info here: http://projectcopernicus.org/Concerts.html) featuring Rod Squance, one of our fine percussionists. We're still working on firming up venues, and we're looking to extend our reach into Broward (Ft. Lauderdale/Hollywood) and West Palm Beach. We'll get those firmed up soon and let you know when we do.

Steve and I have decided to start a press out of pC (http://projectcopernicus.org/pC%20Publishing.html) to help disseminate the music of our artists as widely as possible. We have many talented composers and arrangers on our roster and we're going to make sure they get heard!

Next up on our to do list is a major fundraising campaign. We've been meeting with several people who have been extremely successful at fundraising efforts in Miami and they have been extremely generous with their advice and encouragement. Everybody we've come across is rooting for us to flourish and have been unstinting in their efforts to make it happen.

One last thing: We're official! pC has incorporated in the State of Florida and we're lucky enough to have Miami Beach lawyer Matthew Sarelson (sarelson.com) handling our 501 (c)(3) filing on a pro bono basis. He is very generously donating his expertise through the Miami-Dade County Bar Association's Put Something Back pro bono program. He's a great guy and very enthused about pC.

Moving ahead one step at a time. Drop us a line anytime and let us know if you'd like to have a copy of our debut concert CD. We'll put one in the mail for you right away.

Soft Wind Sunday

Steve's piece beautifully sung by Monica and Brandon.

Next Concert on the Horizon

Friends and fans of Project Copernicus:

pC is tentatively planning our next concert series for mid-May. I can't tell you exactly what the concert will consist of at this point, but I can promise you this; it will be fun, interesting, fresh, and unique. We were thrilled to have large, supportive audiences at both of our venues this weekend, and there was a genuine sense of excitement and appreciation from the public. Additionally, everyone involved with pC felt as though this was a special experience. Musically, the concerts were nothing short of inspiring for many people, including myself, and the biggest question that came up was...when is the next concert? Well, we're working on that as we speak, and we will do our best to have another concert series ASAP.

Larry Johnson of the Miami Herald was in attendance Saturday night, and he has written a very thoughtful and positive review in the Herald. This is the kind of operation that we're likely to see much more of over the next few years, as younger musicians marry their interest in new music with the necessity of reaching audiences they have to educate.

That is the world we live in, and Project Copernicus understands that. I wish them good luck, and hope everyone interested in the new face of classical music will give them the benefit of the doubt as they strike out on their demanding path.

Read the entire post here:

http://www.palmbeachpost.com/blogs/content/shared-blogs/palmbeach/stepanich/entries/2007/01/post_5.html

Heady stuff. We're going to do everything we can to bring Greg's kind words to fruition. Many thanks to Greg Stepanich and the Palm Beach Post!

Chung has also been in very close contact with Larry Johnson of the Miami Herald, having spoken with him several times in the past few days. Mr. Johnson is not only an insightful critic, but he uses his forum to be an advocate for the arts, encouraging Miami's audiences to broaden their horizons. Larry will put a short article about us in the paper today, with a longer one to follow in a couple of weeks. We'll have excerpts and links to both of those articles when they appear. Thanks to Larry Johnson and the Miami Herald for their help in getting the word out about what we're doing!

The press we've been getting has been just fantastic. Larry is very excited about our vision and he will be doing a short writeup about pC to go into the paper this week, with a longer feature on the week of the concert. In addition, he'll be in attendance at our debut concert. With the level of talent that we have and through our hard work we'll do our very best to impress him and all of the concertgoers. The buzz about pC has been just amazing, and frankly, a little surprising. This whole endeavor feels a little bit like Frankenstein's monster - it's taken on a life of it's own, but this is what our wiki-orchestra is all about, and with the people we've got involved all they need is a little room to run and they'll take care of the rest.

Hope you all had a great holiday!

Press on the Palm Beach Post Blog

Hi everyone,

I hope you are having a great holiday season, and best wishes for a safe and happy new year. Chung recently sent press kits and letters to several local music writers, and we have already heard back from one--Greg Stepanich from the Palm Beach Post. I spoke with Greg yesterday and we had a great conversation about pC and our upcoming concerts. Greg is going to write a little something about us on his blog- http://www.palmbeachpost.com/blogs/content/shared-blogs/palmbeach/stepanich/ and he is going to try to attend one of the debut concerts! We are flattered that he is interested in our project, and that he would consider writing about us. Stay tuned to his blog (linked above) to see what he has to say. I can't wait to see everyone in a few weeks! -Steve

The Calm Before the Storm and an e-mail from Sunny Climes

Hello All,

Steve and Chung are safely ensconced with family (and dog) in chilly Vermont and Chicago, but still working away. Chung has reverted to hermitdom with the score to the Mahler/Stein Symphony No. 4, while Steve continues working on publicity materials and all of the other print essentials for our debut concert. Even in the midst of this quiet reverie we have exciting news to report, as we received a very nice e-mail from Greg Stepanich, the music critic for the Palm Beach Post, about doing a post on his blog featuring Project Copernicus. He even said that there might be some interest in doing a feature article in the Post, so we will be sure to be as interesting as possible when we speak with him!

In other news: Carol from Arts at St. John's has very generously provided us with 5000(!) postcards, 4000 of which we Project Copernicus members will distribute and post. Let's drum up lots of interest and pack the houses on Jan. 20 and 21.

Father Perry and everybody at St. Matthew's have been simply spectacular. They have really gone above and beyond, providing rehearsal space, housing guest artists, and now handling the reception. Jean Carmichael at St. Matthew's has been described as the "Hostess with the Mostest" and Jeff Alban, the Music Director at St. Matthew's reported that this is the case several times.

We're looking forward to a long and fruitful relationship with both of these wonderful organizations going ahead.

Hope everybody has had a wonderful holiday season thus far, and all best wishes from Project Copernicus for a safe and prosperous New Year.

NTV News Feature on Monica Yunus

Unfortunately, the user who posted the fantastic Peace Prize ceremony video has removed it from YouTube, but this video will give you a different look at our featured artist.

Featured Artist Monica Yunus Peace Prize Performance

Amazing video of Project Copernicus Featured Artist Monica Yunus performing at the Nobel Peace Prize ceremony in Oslo, Norway. They are very excited to be working with us and they've been extremely generous with time and facilities. They'll be able to accommodate us for all of our rehearsals as well as concerts, and that is a huge coup for our group. Chung went over to visit and they have a beautiful sanctuary with a gorgeous and acoustically advantageous wooden ceiling. The pews were actually quite comfortable and there is ample parking. There is a very nice dining room and the reception's going to be lovely. The real big news that came out of this is that St. Matthew's is very interested in having us there for a four concert series, and Chung also broached the possibility of doing a holiday concert. Chung's going to meet with the vestry (church council) on Thursday evening to discuss the concert series as well as finalize details for our debut concert. The only downside is that they don't have a piano there, so we'll have to work with a digital piano for the moment, but Jeff's working on this and we hope to have something worked out as we move forward.

More soon, and some pictures of our venues if Chung can figure out how to get pictures from the phone to the computer!

Details

Hello All,

Steve was in Miami and it was a whirlwind weekend. Got tons done.

The YMO concert was a huge success. Mark Hart, the executive director of the Coral Gables Community Church Community Arts Program, thinks there were at least 1400 people in attendance. The church holds 1,800, and it was hard to find an empty seat. There were people standing in the back! The Steel Pan Orchestra outdid themselves. They played incredibly intricate and lengthy works completely from memory, and the standards for ensemble precision and dynamic contrast rivalled some of the best classical ensembles I've heard. Most of the members of this group were in their mid-teens with some much younger than that. Everything they did was simply amazing.

On to our first concert. Most of the personnel are set, with Cristhian Rodriguez, a tremendously gifted undergrad from UM playing clarinet/bass clarinet, and Seth Ruse, a percussionist from NWS, also joining us. Rounding it out will be Jamecyn Morey on violin, David Bebe on 'cello, Rod Squance (who just played with Yo-Yo Ma's Silk Road Ensemble) and three others to be named on oboe, flute and harp. Steve, Karen and Chung worked on strategic planning for this concert series and beyond, and Steve took on the huge responsibility of getting the program together. Karen, (whose background in the business world has been invaluable to our group as we plan for the future), is taking care of strategic planning and organization. No detail escapes her eye. It's a great team, and a huge honor to work with them.

Steve and Chung met with Dean Hipp this morning. He looked over our press kit and was very impressed. It was great to have someone of his experience and stature encouraging our efforts, and his door has always been open to us. He is an extremely positive and knowledgeable person, and one gets the definite sense that he considers all of us UM people to be part of an extended family.

Chung's going to meet later this week with Jeff Alban and others from St. Matthew the Apostle Church to go over details for our debut concert, including publicity and (very important!!) the reception.

So many details! We've got a great start, though, and, we'll just keep plugging along.

We're for real

Hello All,

We're for real. We have two concert dates set: on Jan. 20 at St. Matthew the Apostle in Miami and on Jan. 21 Arts at St. John's in Miami Beach. Here's the poster/postcard mailer for this first cycle:

and the back:

Missing some pertinent details, obviously, but we'll get those in tomorrow. The concert is called "Hausmusik" in reference to the masterful reductions done by Schoenberg and Stein to make these works accessible to fine amateurs, and Steve's intimate work fits right in in spirit and scope. We're going to find a chair like Van Gogh's and have it for the concertmaster. Hope he likes it! We love it from a branding perspective, and I'm sure you've all seen ad campaigns similar to this. There was one a few years ago on the Chicago PBS affiliate that used a big, blue, leather easychair that made random appearances all over Chicagoland. Wouldn't it be great if we could do something similar with our more modest Van Gogh chair? Maybe we will!
It's also an homage to the great director Akira Kurosawa and his movie Dreams. One of the dreams represented shows a man at an art gallery suddenly finding himself in a Van Gogh painting. Martin Scorsese plays the mad painter, and the genius of the moviemaking shows itself full-force when you stop deciding what is "real" and what is a "painting". It's this magic we're aiming to recreate in our concerts.

We have most of the personnel set for this first concert as well, with Blake coming down from New York and Randy coming down from Boston. Of course, our featured artists, Brandon and Monica, are coming down from NYC to sing the Mahler and the Danyew. The rest of the group will be filled out with pC members from UM and New World Symphony.

We've been up to other things, as well, including business cards:

letterhead and a press kit. (I think we owe Jim Stephenson a mug for winning the slogan contest!) Happy to send a press kit to you if you can think of someone who might be interested in having us, or even if you're just curious. Just let us know.

We're both involved in a wonderful concert with the Young Musician's Orchestra, the Miami Steel Pan Symphony, Chuck Bergeron Quartet, Bob Heath, organ and Craig Morris, trumpet. Steve did the arrangements for jazz quartet and strings, and Chung's conducting this monster, which literally has something for everyone. Believe me, if you haven't heard Leroy Anderson's Christmas Festival played by steel pan ensemble and orchestra you have not lived. It's a hoot. The Miami Steel Pan Symphony, led by Leon Foster Thomas, is a truly impressive ensemble. They hadn't heard the work a scant month and a half ago. They played it today from memory! Their energy, musicianship and dedication were truly inspirational, as was the spirit of giving and collaboration with which they approached this endeavor. What an honor it was to hear and work with them.

More soon.

Really Rolling Now

We've finally got a real concrete date (Jan. 21) for our first concert and we've lined up several performers, including Monica Yunus soprano from the Met and Brandon McReynolds, a fine tenor who has sung with the Florida Grand Opera. In addition, we have Blake Espy, a New York freelancer on violin, Randy Wong, who teaches ear-training and allied courses at NEC on bass and most likely several performers from the New World Symphony. The program will be the one we've been kicking around for a while now: Steve's beautiful Soft Wind, the Debussy/Schoenberg Afternoon of a Faun, and the Mahler/Stein/Platt Symphony No. 4. The concert is entitled "Hausmusik" in reference to these arrangers intentions to bring these pieces down to a size that (good!) amateurs could play at home. We're still looking for a second venue for Saturday the 2oth and I'm confident we'll find one.

On the education front, Chung has been working with the beautiful children at Creative Children's Therapy for almost a month now, and really getting comfortable and enjoying getting to know the kids. It has been a challenge at times, but they've made great strides and will be presenting a concert this Saturday the 2nd of holiday music, with the kids playing tone chimes, drums, tambourines and autoharps.

Much more to write but it's very late. We're forging ahead and pretty soon, this whole thing's going to be for real.

Hi all,

This is the logo that we have decided to go with for now. He worked to firm up the January date for a concert in their beautiful sanctuary and discussed the possibility of future collaborations. They have an incredibly eclectic and varied program over there, with classes in everything from belly dancing to acting, as well as fantastic musical offerings. We would be a great fit for this program, and we'd help to further their mission statement, which is:

To encourage, present and provide a forum for all forms of the arts, with a special emphasis on the diverse traditions of our communities in South Florida and also on the newly emerging art forms that represent the blending of cultures, races, beliefs, and ethnicities in our global community. To encourage the arts as a medium for bringing social, spiritual and personal healing, transformation and reconciliation.

It's a wonderful, beautiful mission - a worthwhile thing to strive for, and strikingly similar to what we've laid out in our own business plan.

In other news:

We will be starting with Creative Children's Therapy next week, working on a Christmas program. We're not sure what to expect as we've never worked with developmentally disabled children before, but whatever happens, we're certain that this will be a life changing experience.

We're still waiting on finalizing our logo. Chung thought the top one looked too much like it had pine trees growing out of it, and the bottom one is great but too complicated for everyday use. Steve thought that those actually were pine trees (yikes!). LL Bean is not what we're after but we thought that the general idea was fantastic. A few small changes and we should be on our way.

The Starbucks thing will have to remain a mystery for the time being, but I can tell you that we are working to make a recording that benefits an organization you've heard about quite a bit lately. We're also working on concerts in the New New York Times Building in Manhattan.

So. The latest on concerts:

Program: Danyew, Soft Wind, Work for Tenor and Chamber Ensemble TBA and Mahler/Stein/Platt Symphony No. 4
Dates for the cycle: January 16-21
Venues: Coral Gables Congregational Church and St. Johns on the Lake

Pretty firm, but still waiting to hear for sure from the venues. We'd like to add a venue in Palm Beach County or Broward County (Ft. Lauderdale/Hollywood) and we'll look for one as soon as we hear back from CGCC and St. John's.

We're starting to put a press kit together. Let us know if you'd like to see one and we'll send it right off. It would be great to get some opinions on it.

That's all for now.

All kinds of cool things...

OK, first of all check out the two logos that were designed for us by a friend of Chung's. Post some thoughts and let us know what you think!

Also, pC is presently working on a letter and promotional materials to send out to active arts lovers in Miami. We are also

thinking about making our dress rehearsal or our first concert an "invitation only event" that would give select Miami arts patrons a first look at Project Copernicus and what we are all about. This is another idea that we would like to get your feedback on...

It looks like the dates of our concerts are changing slightly, and rest assured that when they are set in stone we will post them boldly here for all to see. This week should prove to be an exciting week as we further nail down details of the upcoming season, and possibly solidify exciting relationships with local organizations. Chung will have more on that in the next few days, along with the news of how a Project Copernicus recording could end up in your local Starbucks pretty soon. Umm yeah...I said Starbucks. Our first concert dates are set! Jan. 11 and 12, 2007. The concert on the 11th will be at Coral Gables Congregational Church, a beautiful Spanish style building right across the street from the Biltmore Hotel. The main sanctuary is simply stunning with a warm and resonant acoustic. The church is on the National Register of Historic Places and is in the heart of the historic district. The concert on the 12th is still tentative, but will be firmed up next week. This one will be at St. John's-on-the-Lake in North Miami Beach. Again, a stunning location overlooking a waterway that leads directly into Biscayne Bay and a wonderful sanctuary. This concert will be in conjunction with Arts at St. John's, one of the real movers and shakers in the arts community here in Miami. They will provide invaluable publicity and the venue for us, and the possibility of further collaborations with them seems to be very good. My wish list for that weekend includes recording sessions of the music from that cycle, and I've been in discussions with Victor Sachse at Centaur Records about a distribution deal. We're really moving now, and I'm looking forward to hearing the sound of all of your talents. Be in touch and I'll see you soon.

Why we're different

Last Friday, I participated in a panel discussion with UM composition students and faculty. I wasn't really sure if I had anything to write about, even though I had plenty to say during the discussion. Also participating in the discussion were colleagues of mine from two other groups, one in a chamber ensemble comprised of piano trio plus clarinet and one starting a "new" music group. I put "new" in quotes because after a week of digesting the discussion I had with the class and my colleagues I've finally figured out why what we are doing is different. We're just playing music. Straight up. No "new" music/poetry slams in a shipyard or throwing a modern work on the front half of a program just to have one and then hoping that the trapped audience stays around for the Beethoven on the second half. No assumptions about the audience's intellectual capacity to understand the music of living composers. Just find some good music and play it to the best of our ability. Find something in it that isn't on the page.

So many groups bemoan the fact that audiences don't want to hear works of living composers or they purposefully put themselves into a "new" music ghetto by only performing contemporary music. I think both these approaches are extreme and that ultimately, we end up in the same place. The already small group of people who are listening to serious music are being told that this new music stuff is weird and difficult, to be played only on college campuses or in warehouses with welders and performers in black leather. If that's your thing, cool, but what we're proposing is that there is a middle way. How about if we don't let on that the music is "new" and we just program it as music? No prejudice inducing tags. Just music, plain and simple. There are plenty of long dead composers that people have never heard of that sometimes show up on concert programs (Heinichen, Monn, Hans Rott. Everybody's got a champion). This isn't a bait and switch, this is having enough faith in the music and our musicianship that we can stop apologizing for the music and the way we play it. I've been a proponent of new music for as long as I've been conducting for many reasons, but to be honest, mostly because it is really exciting to work with living composers. Also, in a very real way, I can be a part of the creative process from the work's inception. That's an honor. Project Copernicus is about realigning musical paradigms and tearing down the walls of the musical ghettos we're living in. We don't need these distinctions anymore. Let's just make some good, honest music and get down to the business of touching people's hearts .

Dean Hipp letter and plans for the week

Hello All,

It's been a grueling two weeks for us and we can finally stand back and take a breath. The business plan has been submitted for the Rothschild Competition here at UM, and no matter what the outcome, the tight deadline and narrow focus of their requirements forced us to solidify both what pC was about and how we are going to present pC to the community, donors and to you, the artist/members.

Next week will be spent solidifying dates and finding venues and once that's set, we'll all be going for our calendars and hopefully we'll get you all down here. The dates we're shooting for are (including rehearsals) Jan. 10th to the 14th, March 14th - 18th and May 2nd - 6th. To the artists: For those of you that I don't know (which is most) I'd just like to say hi and tell you how much I look forward to working with you. To the fans: Thank you so much for your interest and support. I hope to see you at our debut concert, which we are working on scheduling as we speak (or type).

Undoubtedly, Chung has brought together a fantastic group of young players, and this project should prove to be an incredibly rewarding experience for everyone involved. Chung and I both welcome any and all of your comments here, as this is a collective effort, and not only do we want the advice and help of everyone involved, but we need it. So...start blogging! I can't wait to see and be a part of the great things that this group will accomplish, and I so very much look forward to meeting you in person soon.

Steve Danyew

Repost of our First Post: First Post, Exciting Times

Tuesday, September 26, 2006

Welcome to our first post. The picture’s from a recent trip to Vienna. These two little girls just popped their heads out of the window and said “Hallo”! I do the same to you. Many of you are up to speed on what’s going on so far, but let me just give you all a quick rundown on the doings. First of all, I’d like to welcome Stephen Danyew as Co-Artistic Director. Stephen’s a tremendously gifted composer who has won numerous composition prizes and has been deeply involved with education programs here in Miami. It’s an honor and privilege to have him on board as my partner. His creativity and intelligence will be a valuable asset as we try to wend our way down this new path.

Right now I’m focussed on two issues:setting real concert dates/programs and raising funds. We are working on a concert for the weekend of Nov. 17th so check your calendars to see if you have that weekend free. We have some ideas for great venues and I’m working on several others, including the ones that are hypothetically listed on the “Subscription Series” page. Stephen and I are working on business plans to enter into a competition here at UM with a large cash prize which will give us a substantial boost. If any of you has experience in fund-raising, writing business plans or knows of someone who might be interested in supporting our group please contact me.

I’ll be taking the first step in fulfilling the education portion of our mission by meeting with staff members from Creative Children Therapy on Thursday morning about starting a music program for the special needs children that they serve. They want to start an orchestra program for these kids and we’re going to get creative and see what we can do to serve these children. Again, ideas wanted!

Keep me posted on your doings. I’ll put your personal events and web pages on the “News and Events” and “Links” page so that we can connect with as many people as possible. Include links to individual events so that we can move higher up the Google rankings

B Plan Done-For Now

Monday, October 9, 2006

We’ve been working diligently on a business plan for pC to submit to the Rothschild Business Plan Competition and it's done-for now. This first submission is only for the preliminary round, and we sure hope we're moving on to the next one. Our wiki model showed its value here, and the many who helped with the plan will see the obvious signs of their handiwork. The overarching goal in this endeavor is for many voices to become a unified one, a noble goal for any musical ensemble, and now this ideal is being used towards governance, fund-raising, publicity and the endless other things we need to do to succeed as a musical entity. So thanks, and keep it coming. Now that the initial excitement has dissipated it's time to do the hard work, and I find that every conversation and e-mail from you all is a great infusion of energy and inspiration, so don't let up.

Some updates:

1. We've been talking with Mark about the project-in-residence designation from CGCC CAP on a consistent basis and we're hopeful that something will be worked out soon. In the meantime, we're going to go ahead and incorporate so the group that exists in our hearts and minds will exist in the eyes of the State of Florida.
2. We're looking at the weekends of Jan. 12, Mar. 16, and May 4 for concerts. We'll be working on venues this week and next.
3. We haven't gotten many responses for our slogan contest so it looks like Jim Stephenson is in the lead with "Miami's New Center for Visionary Music". Has a very Copernican ring to it, no?

Meetings, Ideas, Encouragement

Wednesday, October 4, 2006

Yet another exciting day in the life of Project Copernicus. We now have a finished first draft of the business plan including budget estimates, as well as a preliminary logo and press kit. We finished the draft of the business plan this morning and presented the materials as well as a preliminary description of the CAP Young Composers Competition to Dennis Kam and Lansing McLoskey. Both Dennis and Lansing are well-established composers and educators with a wealth of experience in community arts organizations and ensembles. They both agreed that pC is a unique and innovative idea, and that Miami can support a group that reaches out to the audiences that are just not served by other organizations. Both professors had great ideas as far as how we should proceed, in addition to possible ideas regarding future collaborations. Lansing suggested that pC assemble a Board of Advisers consisting of prominent composers, conductors, and administrators. There are many benefits to doing this, and he particularly pointed to the leverage and legitimacy that a Board of Advisers can bring to an organization.

After that meeting we had a short break during which we discussed and designed a logo that we think turned out clean, slick, and simple. We added it to the website and all our promotional materials, and we put together a very nice glossy folder for our meeting with Dean Bill Hipp. In the folder we included a copy of the business plan, printouts of pages of the website, and resumes/bios. It looked great, and we presented that to Dean Hipp this afternoon in a short meeting with him. We introduced the idea, and he familiarized himself with the details of the ensemble by asking us questions about all aspects of the project. He really believes in the idea, and agrees that pC will be on a level of its own integrating young artists, interesting collaborations and programming, and cutting-edge educational outreach. The synergy of all of these aspects makes pC a truly exciting and innovative venture, and Dean Hipp seemed impressed that we were already so far along. He gave us some great leads for local music press and publicity, and will offer us access to Festival Miami’s donor list and the materials that the Festival sends to donors. He also wanted to take some time over the weekend to really look at our site and read the materials, and said he would have even more thoughts at that point. In addition, he offered to write a letter of support for pC which we could send along with pC materials to a number of organizations and individuals. He is a fantastic person to have on board, and it is exciting that he is going to offer his thoughts, advice, and support as we move forward.

Meeting w/ CGCC CAP

Tuesday, October 3, 2006

Today we met with Mark Hart, Executive Director of the Community Arts Program at the Coral Gables Congregational Church. I’m not even sure where to start, as we talked about a myriad of exciting possibilities, and a lunch meeting turned into a 4 hour festival of ideas and excitement. First of all, we have been writing the business plan since the meeting ended, minus time for food and sleep, so that we can give Mark a draft tomorrow. He is really interested in the possibility of having Project Copernicus be "a project of the Community Arts Program at CCGC." What would that mean? Well, a laundry list of things, not the least of which would be great access to resources for concert planning, funding, and it would alleviate the need to have a board and financial structure. Donors could write checks to the Community Arts Program and they could be set aside for Project Copernicus. pC artists would act as mentors for children in the Young Musicians Orchestra, and thus the group would be ensemble-in-residence for the YMO. The benefits for pC are fantastic, and we think that the benefits for CCGC would be equally rewarding.

So, we are going to give Mark a draft of the business plan and he is going to run the idea by a few other people at CCGC to see what they think. Also, we are meeting for lunch today with Dennis Kam and Lansing McLoskey, composition professors at UM to discuss the group, as well as a new young composers competition that we fleshed out yesterday with Mark. The YMO had toyed with the idea of putting on a competition last year, and planned out all of the details, but never gave it the green light. When we started talking about possibilities and unique ideas with a young composers competition, Mark loved it and we drafted up a competition to take place this season. The theme will be a composition for string orchestra with soloists or non-traditional instruments encouraged, and the piece will embrace the Latin or African-American culture. We would like Dennis Kam to serve as chairman of the jury for the competition, so that is another exciting possibility we want to discuss with him.

Today in the afternoon we will also be meeting with Bill Hipp, dean of the music school at UM, and simply an amazing resource on the arts and a great man. He has been dean for 23 years and has a wealth of knowledge and experience that is relevant to concert planning, budgeting, marketing, etc. We are thrilled that he is willing to meet with us and give us some of his thoughts, and he has already told us that pC is "innovative," and that he looks forward to talking with us. We will be back after that with a report that I imagine will be quite exciting.

Marcus Roberts Trio

Sunday, October 1, 2006

Just a quick post about MRT. They performed their arrangement of the Gershwin Concerto in F tonight for opening night of UM’s Festival Miami and brought it firmly into the present day. It was incredibly alive and vibrant and of course the audience just loved it. It was the synergy and the creative tensions of melding improvised jazz with composed jazz that made the whole thing so electric. This is something we can do and in some ways, something we must do. What I mean is that we need to find some way to dust off the old and make it relevant again. I’ve never seen the orchestra happier, and as I mentioned earlier, the audience were just thrilled. Everybody won tonight - Gershwin, the MRT, we as musicians and serious music in general.

Some items of business:
Thinking of delaying the concert until January. Hard finding the players we need and also, I just want this to be great. So, little delay, but still plugging along. The next few days are going to be packed. Meetings with the Dean of the School of Music, Chair of the Composition Department, Executive Director of the Coral Gables Congregational Church Community Art program and anybody else we can find who will listen to us. Also got to get that business plan out. So. Deep breath tomorrow in between a concert for me and meetings in the evening and headlong into the big things. Wish us luck.

Steve blogs from the cocktail party.

Friday, September 29, 2006

At our meeting yesterday morning with CCT (Creative Children Therapy), Chung and I were invited to attend a cocktail party last night held by a foundation that supports some of the efforts of CCT and similar organizations. The very gracious people at CCT wanted to introduce us to many people who could serve as important and useful resources in our collaborations with CCT and the general growth of Project Copernicus. Unfortunately, I was only able to stay for about half of the party, and Chung had a dress rehearsal with the UM orchestra. Nevertheless, I had a great time and in a whirlwind I met many welcoming people who all seemed excited about CCT’s endeavor. I handed out a bunch of business cards and I put our website on the back and made sure to explain our connection, and what we are trying to do. Everyone I spoke to was very interested, and we were constantly tossing around new ideas for these projects. In fact, one gentlemen mentioned a contact he had in the Venezuelan Youth Orchestra system, where they have not only many strong youth orchestras, but also a program dedicated to serving children with disabilities. He said it may be a great resource and contact for us, and Yani from CCT said that she would get us the contact.

I was happy to get the chance to meet Maida Santander, the President of American Children’s Orchestras for Peace (www.americanchildrensorchestras.org). Chung and I had agreed that we really needed to make contact with them and discuss their efforts and ideas, after CCT introduced their program to us. Maida was very welcoming and I have no doubt that we can contact her at any time to learn about their project. She also mentioned that they are constantly looking to collaborate with new people, so we may certainly have the opportunity to work with them if we would like.

The cocktail party was held on Grove Isle, in Coconut Grove, which is quite a beautiful place I must say. It is a tiny little island that only has a hotel and condo building on it, and a ton of manicured landscaping. The foundation that hosted the event was "La Ventana De Los Cielos," (laventanadeloscielos.org) and they began to collaborate with CCT only a year ago, and the foundation aims to support the "development of children and teenagers, with physical or mental limitations..." It was a great event, and I am glad that CCT invited us and that I was able to attend, as I met some great people who will undoubtedly be friends of Project Copernicus as we grow.

Better Than Baby Steps and a Wikiorchestra moment.

Friday, September 29, 2006

Hi there. Two very important bits of news:

1. Our first concert is looking like a reality. We have most of the performers lined up and I’ll be searching for venues early next week. The “hypothetical” portion of the subscription series has moved down by one concert. Our debut concert is starting to turn from a mist into rain. The next step is making something grow.
2. Steve and I had a great meeting with the Creative Children’s Therapy people today. What they are doing is impressive, different and incredibly relevant, things that our group will also strive to be. We have worked out an agreement to start an orchestra program for these children and I’m excited about tackling the challenges these encounters will bring. Everything from figuring out how to notate music to getting everybody doing the same thing at the same time will be an adventure, but since nobody’s tried it, who knows it can’t be done? In addition, they will also work with us to help meet our fundraising goals and navigate the murky waters we are in as a budding non-profit. And lastly and perhaps most importantly as we try and get on our feet, we have discussed the possibility of CCT making a donation to PC in exchange for our work with their kids.

So. Exciting developments.

Steve and I were invited to a CCT donors cocktail party. I wasn’t able to attend but Steve was available as the face of pC for the evening and I’m sure he handled it ably and relieved many people of their wallets! We’ll hopefully have a blog post from him about the cocktail party tomorrow.

Last but not least, I had a true wikiorchestra moment today. I was talking to Randy, one of our bassists, and while we were on the phone he was looking over the “Subscription Series” page. He sees the “Puppets” concert and says,”Do you need a puppeteer? I went to Harvard with one and she’s amazing. I think she’s living in Florida now”. An amazing, Harvard educated puppeteer who lives in Florida. Who knew? It’s an amazing world out there.

Thanks for reading. See you soon.

Can a Wikiorchestra succeed? Dare we try? And, Business Plan started.

Wednesday, September 27, 2006

Hello dear people. I’ve started the business plan tonight. I will forward you a copy of it if you ask for one and I’d like comments. As you read, think about what we can do to differentiate ourselves from the crowd. Here in Miami, so many orchestras have gone down in flames that people are a little gun shy about supporting anything with the word “orchestra” in it. But I remain convinced that we can succeed by keeping our mission taut, budget lean and mean and our production values high, and by high I mean at the level expected in New York or Vienna. We have the talent to do it, that is for sure.

As for the question “Can a wikiorchestra succeed” I think the answer is a resounding yes. What is a wikiorchestra? You all know about wikipedia, where people have created an open source encyclopedia. There is some governance, of course, but the whole endeavor is largely self-created and self-governing, like craigslist. I think we can run an orchestra this way to some extent. Ideas on marketing, programming, outreach and almost everything else that is relevant to the operation of an orchestra can only enhance our product. But how to avoid territorial battles and Guarneri Quartet like arguments about artistic matters etc? If we can keep our focus on making our group relevant and valuable to our customers - patrons and students - everything else will be secondary. I was so inspired by the example of the Tafelmusik Orchestra in Toronto. When they held a free concert for which there were tickets required, there were lines literally around the block and people turned away. I am convinced that this was because the people of Toronto saw Tafelmusik as their orchestra. I dare say that the TSO would not have the same queues. If we can manage to do the same there is no question we will succeed. The magic is with you. At Tafel all of the musicians make whatever contributions they can on stage as orchestra members, soloists and chamber musicians. Our group will do all of those things and also make contributions to education or whatever else they have a passion for. If you have a passion for accounting, great. For cooking, great. Whatever. We all have hidden skills. Time to pull them out. We need them and want them.

Tomorrow Steve and I meet with Creative Children’s Therapy. We’ll let you know how it goes and what comes of it. All the best. And thanks for everything you do.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://coperniblog.blogspot.com/2006/10/business-plan-started-can-wikiorchestra.html' title='Can a Wikiorchestra succeed?
